Affandi
Affandi (born 1907, Cirebon, West Java-died May 23, 1990) was one the artist in Indonesia. After finishing his secondary education he found himself increasingly interested in painting, and in his mid-twenties he emerged as a self-taught artist. In the 1930s, Affandi became affiliated with an artist’s group called “Lima Bandung.” The other artists in the group were Hendra Gunawan, Barli, Sudarso, and Wahdi. The “Lima Bandung” went on to become highly influential in the development of Indonesian modern art. During the struggle for the independence, he was actively involved in painting posters encouraging people to take arms against the Ducth and Japan. He then moved on to Jakarta and became one of the founder of the Union of Indonesian Painters. He is one of the world-figures of modern painters in Indonesia that adheres to the pure expressionism. His painting technique is directly squeezing the paint from its tube to the canvas where he developed this technique from 1960s untill his death. Affandi paintings often display his emotional responses to the lives of people to move out of poverty towards dignity. Around 300 of his paintings were kept as Affandi Museums collection. He died and burriedn outside of hi museum in Yogyakarta
