The Center for Southeast Asian Studies at University of Hawaiʻi, Mānoa
Aloha! Welcome to the Center for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS) at the University of Hawai’i-Mānoa (UHM).
CSEAS is one of only eight National Resource Centers (NRC) for the study of Southeast Asia in the United States as funded by the US Department of Education. It is an administrative center that serves as a coordinating body for the study of Southeast Asia throughout the University of Hawaiʻi. With access to more than 50 faculty resource people distributed through 21 departments, the Center works with the largest concentration of Southeast Asia specialists in the United States. More than 80 language and area studies courses are regularly offered each semester, with particular strengths in the humanities and social sciences.
For the period of 2014-2018, CSEAS has supported a new Vietnamese language initiative with our UH system partner Kapiʻolani Community College; provided funding and web space for the innovative UH Tagalog language program animation film project and outreach materials development effort; underwritten a major UHM Balinese theatre and dance project that promises long-term community outreach potential; worked with our Indonesian partners at the Center for Religious and Cross-cultural Studies, Gadjah Mada University, to feature issues related to diversity and minority voices across Indonesia; provided FLAS scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students working in Southeast Asia area and language studies; partnered with our UH East Asia and Pacific Island NRC programs to develop a course on Teaching About Asia and the Pacific designed for undergraduate students training to be teachers in the UH College of Education; and maintained and upgraded our important outreach efforts through our popular website and social media network.
In September 2017, CSEAS launched its newly redesigned website. We wrote a post about how we made our site more accessible.
