José Ramos-Horta

José Ramos-Horta: (1949- …) One of prominent figures in East Timor independe movements and a Nobel of peace recipient, Ramos-Horta served as East Timor prime minister from 2006 – 2007 and then as president 2007-2012. Born to native He studied law in the US before returing to East Timor to join independence movement. However, a series of conflicts with the rulers brought him to Mozambique to be exiled. Then, he lived in Sydney for several years and became the voice of East Timor abroad while working at the UN .As he returened to Dili, East Timor capital, he run for presidency in 2007. While he served his presidential term, he was shot by rebels outside his home. He bid for another term in 2012, however, he only came in third place. He is now still remain as an important figure in East Timor political landscapes.
